Nestlé Seeks to Grow India’s Premium Coffee Segment with Nespresso Launch

Nestlé will launch Nespresso in India in a bid to tap into growing consumer demand for premium coffee beverages.

In a press release, Nestlé said it will open the first Nespresso Boutique in Delhi later this year and roll-out further stores in other key cities from 2025.

With the ‘aim of growing the premium coffee category’ in India, Nestlé will sell both at-home and professional Nespresso coffee pods and machines supported by an e-commerce channel.

“I am delighted that we are introducing Nespresso to coffee lovers in India. For almost 40 years, Nespresso has been committed to elevating the coffee experience through its signature taste and to embedding sustainability in every part of the business. Having sourced green coffee from India since 2011, I am excited to see the brand continuing to grow in this promising coffee market,” said Guillaume Le Cunff, CEO, Nespresso.

Launched by Nestlé in 1985, Nespresso distributes to 81 markets globally and operates more than 800 boutique outlets across 76 countries. Its Nespresso division currently works with approximately 2,000 Indian coffee farmers through its Nespresso AAA coffee sourcing programme.

In September 2022, Nestlé said it would invest Rs 5,000 Cr ($613m) in India by 2025 to capitalise on growth opportunities for its products in the country, with half the investments focused on scaling the company’s coffee and confectionery portfolio.

In May 2023, Nestlé highlighted India as one of its fastest-growing coffee markets globally and said it its coffee division was ‘gaining household penetration’ as consumers seek more premium beverages.

The following November, Philipp Navratil – currently Head of the Swiss food and beverage giant’s Coffee Strategic Business Unit and recently appointed Global CEO at Nespresso – said he was ‘bullish’ about rising coffee consumption in India and new opportunities for the brand in the country.
